One Hour Technology Workshop Lesson Plan
Date: April 15, 2014
Lesson: Webquest and Social Media in the Classroom
Subject: Instructional Technology
Grade Level: Sixth, Seventh, Eighth grade teacher (s)
Duration: One hour
Overview:
Participants will learn how to increase student engagement by implementing various technology tools.
Participants learn easy ways to create Webquests for their classrooms.
Participants will learn how to implement the use of social media such as Instagram and Twitter as part of instruction.
Participants will create one instructional activity for their classroom based upon knowledge gain in workshop.
Essential Questions:
How can the use of social media increase student engagement?
How can webquests be used in the classroom to differentiate instruction and increase student engagement?

Objectives:
Individual will explore a web tool to gain knowledge and understanding. Individual will take that knowledge and understanding an effectively use it to implement with students so that they can hold classroom discussions using technology.
Materials:
Laptop; pencil/pen, paper, copy of workshop agenda, handouts.

Workshop Procedures:
Opening
1. Review Agenda and answer any initial questions. Discuss the school mission which includes 21st century Technology in the classroom and Innovative and engaging standards based instruction.
2. Introduce workshop website and resources.
3.4. Discussion- Role of technology integration plays in student engagement and achievement. Mention the Engaged Learning Blendspace found under resources on the web site.
5. Review Teacher and Student NETS Standards.
Webquest
1. Review Webquests and how they can be used for differentiation and student engagement.
2. Introduce various websites which can be used to find webquest to use in the classrooms.
3. Discuss how many pre-made webquest are not developed correctly or do not meet needs of classroom.
4. Introduce Weebly and Symbaloo. Show examples of webquest using these tools.
5. Demonstrate how easy it is to create webquest using these sites.
6. Show on workshop website where resources for these sites are located.
Social Media
1. Discuss how social media can be integrated into instruction.
2. Demonstrate the proper way to set up social media accounts to use in the classroom.
3. Show example of how Instagram and Twitter can be used in the classroom.
4. Pass out the handouts Instagram and Twitter in the classroom.
Work Period:
Participants will spend this time selecting one of the tools demonstrated in the workshop to create an account for their classroom. They will develop an activity to use in their classroom using one of the technology tools.
Closing:
Have participants share ideas they came up for their classroom using the technology tools discussed in the workshop.
Ask Participants to complete the workshop evaluation.
Assessments:
Formal Assessments:
Participants will take a workshop survey at the end of the workshop via Google Drive.
Informal Assessments:
Participants will be observed during the work period to gauge their understanding of creating Webquests and incorporating social media in their classrooms. This will be gauge based upon activities which participants are developing during the work period.
Follow-up Observations:
Periodic follow-up will take place with participants to address any additional needs. Follow-up will also take place with those who requested additional coaching in their post worksh
